Huddersfield Lawn Tennis and Squash Club captain Ian Smith was the outstanding performer in this week’s racquetball fixture coming from 2-0 down to win 3-2 and helping his side to an overall victory.

The club claimed a great win bouncing back from last week’s defeat and put in a very strong performance away to Wilsden in the Kirklees and Calderdale Racquetball League.

John Whiteley vs Keith Campbell (HLTSC)

Match 1 (3rd Seeds)

7-11, 11-4, 7-11, 1-11.

Keith Campbell of HLTSC wins

This was Campbell’s first match of the season and he came out on top with some great shots combining great agility and classic drop shots. Whilst Campbell dropped the 2nd game he held on comfortably to the 3rd and powered home in the 4th to win the opening match 1-3.

Chris Dennison vs Ian Smith (HLTSC)

Match 2 (2nd seeds)

4-11, 14-12, 11-5, 8-11, 2-11.

Ian Smith of HLTSC wins 2-3

Ian Smith was the top performer

Probably the match of the night in terms of closeness. Despite a good start from HLTSC’s captain Ian Smith playing his first match of the season, he took the first game comfortably, the local Wilsden player Chris Dennison won the next two games.

Smith was 2-1 down but staged a great comeback to take the 4th game in a great duel with Dennison. The 5th game was a one-sided affair as the HLTSC captain held his nerve to close the match out 2-3.

Tom Cleminson vs Dan Lawton (HLTSC)

Match 3 (1st Seeds)

11-5, 4-11, 9-11, 8-11

Dan Lawton wins 1-3

Lawton did incredibly well against such a strong player in Tom Cleminson in what was a lung-busting match to even watch never mind play in.

Lawton lost the first game, he was acclimatising to Wilsden’s new courts and the style of Cleminson’s play. The HLTSC representative then seemed to move up another gear for the 2nd game to reverse the scoring of the first game. The 3rd and 4th were very close affairs but Lawton always had the edge on Cleminson.

HLTSC currently sit second in the Kirklees and Calderdale Squash and Racquetball Division One table on 28 points. That’s six points behind top club Queens who are on 34 points.

Racketball Division 1

Overall Match score 4-12 to HLTSC.
