The Winter Festival in St George’s Square in Huddersfield town centre has been cancelled for this Christmas.
Organisers took the decision due to Kirklees Council continuing to do work in the square and the constant rail cancellations needing bus replacements.
The organisers, Huddersfield Live, said in a message on Facebook: “It is with great sadness that we are unable to deliver our wonderful Winter Festival this year. It has been brought to our attention by Kirklees that there are many, much needed works being carried out in and around the square during the festive period.
“Due to all the many restrictions and possibility of last minute changes to the projects it is completely undeliverable safely and effectively in the small space available, along with the possibility of road closures and temporary bus/rail replacements in the square.
“We have been looking at alternative areas but nothing will work for our lovely tipis. We are heartbroken as this is such a special time for us and everyone who joins us in our ‘Happy Place’ but, rest assured, we will be back with our wonderful Winter Festival.
“Meanwhile, remember these works do need to take place and it will make our town a lovelier place to be so bear with it.”
