Huddersfield denim artist Ian Berry is staging an exhibition featuring some of the UK’s best artists who use some very unusual materials.

Ian, who sells his work made entirely from recycled jeans worldwide, has curated this exhibition – called Art Materialism – in London where he lives.

The exhibition at the Catto Gallery in Hampstead features celebrated artists including Benjamin Shine, Christian Faur, David Wightman, Justin Ruby, Lill O Sjöberg, Matt Small, Max Zorn and Peter Combe.

Ian said: “Art Materialism is a collective of internationally renowned artists who are known for their use of unorthodox materials. They have pushed their chosen medium beyond the novelty and perfected their craft.

“They tend towards the over-abundant and easy to access materials available in an even more commercialised world. The exhibition is displaying pieces created from materials as varied as denim, packing tape, sneakers, car upholstery, scrap metal, wallpaper, tulle fabric, crayons and paint swatches.”

Ian added: “I found I was always drawn to artists who had created works out of materials no-one had attempted to use before. We all had to teach ourselves a way of using it.

“I wanted to bring these artists together as it’s important to me that we support one other. Being an artist is often so solitary, especially with our time-consuming detailed work, so it’s good to group together.”

Most of the artists involved became known before social media existed and, while often shared online, the works are much better viewed in person as many have a three-dimensional quality.

The exhibition is on until November 6 at the Catto Gallery, 100 Heath Street, Hampstead, London, NW3 1DP.

It’s open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 5.30pm and on Sundays from 12noon to 5pm.
