Huddersfield’s car boot sale will be held every Sunday this season after a stop-start beginning.

The car boot started in August 2022 and is held on the top car park at the John Smith’s Stadium.

However, the car boot couldn’t be held when the car park was already booked for young driver training sessions or when there was football or rugby league matches at the stadium.

But now the operator, National Car Boot Sales, has secured a deal to use the former gasworks site off nearby St Andrew’s Road on the Sundays when the top car park isn’t available.

The stadium car boot is Huddersfield’s first privately-operated car boot sale, and is officially licensed by Kirklees Council.

Its ambition to become the biggest and best car boot sale in Kirklees and Calderdale had been held back because buyers and sellers could never be sure the car boot was taking place. Now if it’s not on at the top car park, it’ll be a short walk away on the gasworks site.

Jerome O’Malley, of National Car Boot Sales, said: “Last year was a bit stop-start for various reasons but now Huddersfield car boot sale will be on every Sunday and people will know it’s happening. Generally speaking we’ll be on the gasworks site on the first Sunday of every month.”

This Sunday (April 16) will be the third car boot of the year and Jerome said: “The season has kicked off well and we’re expecting to be very busy.

“Huddersfield and surrounding areas have never had a regular car boot sale and Huddersfield people had to go to car boots outside Huddersfield.

“Now we are here every Sunday we can grow and make this the best car boot sale for the people of Huddersfield.”

The weather looks set fair for Sunday too but Jerome said: “I never look at the weather forecast. The best advice came from my mum who said: ‘Open the curtains and look outside!’”

The Huddersfield car boot opens for sellers at 7am and buyers at 8am. It costs £10 per vehicle for sellers and £1 entry for buyers.

There’s a burger van and a coffee van too.
