Community leaders in Huddersfield are tackling social isolation – with day trips to the seaside.

The Pakistan Association Huddersfield is based at Thornton Lodge, one of the most deprived parts of Kirklees and among the worst 10% nationally.

Since September last year the association has been running a project to help elderly people which is funded by the Big Lottery Community Fund.

A group of people who would otherwise not get out and meet others meet every Monday (11am-1pm) at the association community centre at 2 Hall Avenue, Thornton Lodge, HD1 3NL.

The association have run a series of coach trips to seaside resorts including Blackpool and Scarborough. The latest trip in July (pictured above) went to Llandudno.

Association treasurer and former Kirklees councillor Jamil Akhtar MBE JP said: “The purpose of the seaside trip is removing the problem of social isolation and to enable older people to enjoy life, maintaining health and social contact with other people.

“It is important to help them remain independent, lead satisfying and fulfilling lives, and also improve the quality of life.”
