An animal lover decided to take the plunge into self-employment and follow her passion when she was made redundant.

Lauren Maher, 24, had worked in human resources for three years but when her job ended she decided on a career and lifestyle change.

Lauren had always loved dogs and has a Cavapoo called Soxs, a surprise birthday gift from fiance Liam Tasker.

Now she has launched Bark & Stroll, which she describes as a “community” and so much more than just a dog walking and minding service.

Lauren said: “I have always wanted to be in the animal caring business as I adore all animals big and small. I studied fine art at university and decided to start painting portraits of people’s pets!

“I worked in HR for three years and when I was unexpectedly laid off it was a huge shock to my system.

“HR was a huge part of my life and I realised one of the main reasons I loved it so much was because of the people interaction and difference I was able to make. I have always been a people person and consider myself a very positive and enthusiastic person.

“Since then I decided to re-evaluate my career and decided that it was a blessing in disguise to be able to now choose a path towards something I have always loved, caring for animals.

“I have been animal and – especially – dog obsessed for as long as I can remember. Six months after we bought our house together, my now fiancé surprised me with our beautiful dog Soxs and she turned my whole world technicolour!”

Lauren and Soxs love going on long walks around Huddersfield and now Lauren wants to help other doggy paw-rents too.

“Through my business Bark & Stroll I hope to bring adventures to lots of pups and keep tails wagging by spending time with them or keeping them active,” she said.

“I understand how difficult it can be to keep your animals entertained whilst also working full-time as I have experienced it myself. My aim is to keep tails happy and keep their paw-rents happy too! I am also dog walking insured.”
