Knitters are wanted to make wool bonnets for tiny premature babies.
Westend Community Champions – made up of members of Westend Junior Football Club – have teamed up with Slaithwaite-based yarn company Stylecraft.
Enough yarn has been donated to make 2,000 hats for Calderdale & Huddersfield and Manchester hospital neo-natal units.
And now Westend chairman Shaun Weatherhead has appealed for knitters to help.
“Santa’s Seniors, a group of vulnerable people, have already taken up the challenge, along with another 40 local knitters,” said Shaun.
“However, the amazing donation from Stylecraft means we have enough yarn for around 2,000 hats so we need more people to help.”
Westend Community Champions have been working on a variety of campaigns to support the Huddersfield community since November last year.
“When the second lockdown came into force, I was approached by 25 of our juniors who were so inspired by Marcus Rashford that they wanted to make a difference,” said Shaun.
Since then, the club has supported 15 school communities and delivered 3,000 items of food, 2,500 items of clothing, supported 1,000 families at Christmas with gift packs which including five toys, wrapping paper, sticky tape, cards and gift tags.
During the third lockdown over 800 home-learning packs have been distributed to children learning at home and 120 pamper packs to NHS staff.
