The opening of the new A&E at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary remains on target for August 2023.

Work continues apace on the new £15 million building on South Drive on the hospital campus.

Development work started just over a year ago and is due to finish in July ahead of an opening in August.

The Calderdale & Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust marked the anniversary of the first dig with a ‘golden bolt’ ceremony.

A specially-created bolt – sprayed gold – was installed in the roof of the single-storey building by Trust chief executive Brendan Brown.

The ‘golden bolt’ screwed into place by a golden spanner!

Mr Brown said: “This a real milestone on the way to the opening of our fantastic new Emergency Department at HRI. The teams both in the Trust and in our construction partners, have worked hard to keep everything on track over the last year.

“The next few months will be focused on fitting out the interior and I, for one, am so looking forward to the opening day later this year and I know our ED colleagues are too.

“It’s going to be an ED to be proud of and I thank everyone who has been involved for all their hard work which has got us here today.”

Eddie Parker, from Vinci Construction, said: “It’s been a pleasure working in collaboration with CHFT on this project through the past year.”

And his colleague Jamie Graham added: “It’s special to be working on a project like this knowing what the outcome will be. It’s definitely special.”
