Golcar United missed out on the opportunity to extend their lead at the top of the North West Counties Division One North table after losing 3-2 to bottom club St Helens. The Weavers conceded three goals in a last crazy 14 minutes against a team without a win all season.

United were cruising at 2-0 up but collapsed to a shock defeat, slumping to third in the table behind Bury AFC and Saturday’s opponents Holker Old Boys.

Saturday’s game at the Skye Direct Stadium is Golcar’s only home game in December and with the club’s junior players being given free admission the club is hoping for its biggest crowd of the season, topping the 459 against Ilkley Town.

The game against St Helens all started so well for Golcar as Lee Bradshaw put the ball in the net after six minutes. Having gone into the interval 1-0 up, no one would have predicted the final outcome.

United extended their lead in the 65th minute when top scorer Ash Flynn found his magic touch once more. Flynn now has 27 goals this campaign.

The fightback from the home side started in the 78th minute when Elliot Hughes scored. With their tails up St Helens equalised, again through Hughes, in the 88th minute.

But there was a sting in the tail for Golcar two minutes into stoppage time when Dave Thomas wheeled away in celebration when he snatched an unlikely winner to claim St Helens’ first victory of the season – at the 21st attempt!
