George Doyle took a painful elbow to the face but his cool finish sealed Emley AFC’s 2-1 victory over Goole.
The Pewits went into the game at the Fantastic Media Welfare Ground two points behind their opponents in the Toolstation Northern Counties East League Division One.
Emley started the game on the front foot and were rewarded in the 19th minute when Dominic Riordan pinged a sublime ball over the top leaving the Goole defence at panic stations.
Joe Jagger collected the ball and calmly chipped it over the Goole keeper to give Emley a 1-0 half-time lead.
Goole levelled things up on the hour mark with a free-kick. Emley’s wall crumbled and James Arnold’s strike went straight in to make it 1-1.
Emley scored what proved to be the winner in the 72nd minute. A scintillating passage of play started with Lennon O’Grady who delightfully back-heeled the ball to James Ngoe and he slotted through for Doyle to do what he does best.
Doyle, though, was left needing treatment after an apparent elbow in the face which saw Joshua Schofield sent off. Though the young striker took one for the team, Doyle was smiling at the end as Emley held out for a second home win of the season.
Next up for the Pewits is the difficult trip to table-toppers Grimsby Borough on Wednesday night.
