A charity which aims to tackle food poverty, loneliness and food waste by offering a free community meal is coming to Huddersfield.

FoodCycle, which runs 93 weekly community meals across England and Wales, will start up at a church in Aspley in September.

The charity works with thousands of volunteers who serve up healthy hot vegetarian meals in safe and welcoming spaces for people from all walks of life to meet, eat and have conversations, promoting their health and mental well-being.

The meals, cooked with surplus ingredients, are open to everyone and are completely free.

The new Huddersfield meals will run every Monday at 6.30pm from September 23rd at St Joseph’s RC Church in Somerset Road, Aspley, HD5 9AU.

Volunteers cook a three-course meal from scratch with fresh ingredients and create a warm and welcoming atmosphere where people can chat while they eat. The volunteer hosts can also give advice and information about simple recipe ideas and food preparation too.

Sophie Aoun, regional manager for Yorkshire & The Humber, said: “It’s fantastic to be adding another FoodCycle in Yorkshire, offering locals a free community meal in Huddersfield.

“We look forward to providing a safe, welcoming space for anyone who comes along no questions asked.

“We invite people from all backgrounds and walks of life to all our meals, so this will give us an opportunity to introduce great food and conversation to a new community.

“Our vital service runs on the kindness of volunteers, so we’re asking residents local to the area willing to give up a few hours each week to get in touch with us.”
