The University of Huddersfield’s Bath House Gallery is hosting a month-long exhibition of work from some talented young printmakers in conjunction with the West Yorkshire Print Workshop (WYPW).
The work by Fleur Ward, Bachittar Singh, Holly Clayton and Maria Gomezis on display until September 25 in Sovereign Design House in Queen Street South.
Holly and Maria were talent spotted from their graduate showcase at the end of the university term by the WYPW team, and you can still see their work on Radar, while Bachittar and Fleur have been on a year-long Print Fellowship scheme to immerse themselves in printmaking at WYPW in Mirfield.
Showcasing some of the best young printmakers in the North of England, this exhibition seeks to spotlight upcoming talent and give a platform to exhibit new work and an insight into printmaking practices. This body of work from four artists explores representation, identity, portraiture, organic forms and the natural world.
Using a range of printmaking processes from etching and aquatint to screen printing, lino, digital printing and spore printing from mushrooms, the exhibition stretches thinking and showcases new talent. The resulting exhibition is fun, thought-provoking and an exciting look into emerging talent in the North.
The work is on show at the Bath House Gallery in the Toast House on the edge of the university campus – a contemporary, light space – perfect to showcase fine artwork and there is a fantastic café upstairs to get a bite to eat after seeing the exhibition.
Clare Alton-Fletcher, director at WYPW said: “We are really excited to be shining a light on emerging printmakers in the North and partnering with the University of Huddersfield to give young artists a platform to showcase their work.”
As part of the Emerging Artists prize, the talent spotted artists will all have free membership to WYPW for a year and a package of professional development and support as they start their journey into their creative careers.
WYPW is an Arts Council-funded National Portfolio Organisation and the exhibition and Fellowship scheme has been supported by the Idlewild Trust and The Arts Society .
The exhibition will be open until September 25. Mondays-Thursdays 10.30am-1.30pm at the Bath House Gallery in the Toast House at Sovereign Design House with extended opening hours from September 19 for Welcome Week.
