Emley AFC’s FA Cup journey was ended when they went down 2-0 at the Fantastic Media Welfare Ground on Sunday.

Striker James Walshaw saw a second half penalty saved but Avro, from a step above Emley, were in control for significant parts of the game and there can be no complaints from the home side.

The Pewits never looked completely out of the tie, though, as they battled valiantly through a stop-start affair that was marred by plenty of fouls.

The first goal of the game came on the half-hour mark when Avro forward Liam Ellis deftly dinked the ball over Dec Lambton.

Avro doubled the lead just seven minutes after the break when a long ball was knocked down into the path of Joseph Rathbone who lashed home.

Emley were thrown a potential lifeline in the 65th minute when Walshaw was felled in the box and the penalty was awarded.

Walshaw stepped up himself and powerfully struck the ball to the goalkeeper’s right, but a strong hand from Grant Shenton kept the scoreline at 2-0.

Emley’s next game sees them travelling to Eccleshill United on Wednesday (August 9) 7.45 kick-off in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division.
