Emley AFC have made it five wins on the bounce in the Northern Counties East League Premier Division as they hunt down Winterton Rangers in second place. The Pewits beat Eccleshill United 2-1 on Tuesday with pacy forward Iyrwah Gooden scoring his 19th goal of the campaign.
The win was vital as it closes the gap between third-placed Emley and Winterton to just five points.
The Pewits had the ball in the net early against Eccleshill at the Fantastic Media Welfare Ground when Gooden connected with a Stevie Smith cross from the right to make it 1-0. Gooden has now scored eight goals in five games.
The second goal came in the 27th minute when Emley’s Alex Metcalfe burst into the area and hit an early shot. His effort struck Eccleshill defender Jack Cairney and bounced in to double the lead.
Despite some half chances for both sides, the score stayed at 2-0 at half-time.
The visitors pulled one back five minutes after the re-start when Louis Fialdini was in the right place to finish off a good move. That’s how the score ended as Emley claimed a crucial win.
The games are coming thick and fast in the next few weeks with Hemsworth the visitors to the Fantastic Media Welfare Ground on Saturday March 4 (3.00).
