People went quackers as the annual Holmfirth Duck Race returned on Sunday after two years away.

The prospect of a £1,000 first prize saw hundreds of £2 rubber ducks snapped up for the chance to be first past the finishing line.

It was a bit of a slow motion contest as the River Holme wasn’t exactly a raging torrent and youngsters were on hand to ensure any ducks that got beached were hooked back into the water.

The event, organised by Huddersfield & District Round Table, has been held since 1983 and is an annual tradition, raising thousands of pounds for charity.

The lucky winner was a lady called Sylvia.
