A community organisation which supports and inspires young people in Huddersfield has been shortlisted for a top award.

Conscious Youth CIC has been shortlisted for the Community Organisation Award for Age at the National Diversity Awards 2023.

Hailed as the ‘Golden Globes of the diversity world’, the National Diversity Awards will be hosted by renowned TV broadcaster and journalist Clare Balding CBE.

An astonishing 90,000 people nominated this year alone with 120 nominees being recognised for their various achievements nationwide. The awards ceremony will take place at Liverpool Anglican Cathedral on September 15.

Conscious Youth CIC was founded by Sophie Simpson and Serena Johnson and has been working in Kirklees since 2016 to reach young people in their community. The organisation was founded in response to funding cuts to youth services in the district.

The organisation aims to enhance the emotional and mental resilience of young people, through innovative projects which are co-designed and led by young people. The key priorities for Conscious Youth are to address active citizenship and community cohesion.

Activities and initiatives created by the organisation include: The Corner Hub, Conscious Girls, Conscious Boys, healthy holidays summer scheme, delivering an early intervention programme, ‘Stepping up and Stepping out’ in schools and colleges and Voices2action.

Co-founder and director of operations Sophie Simpson said: “Being shortlisted for this award is an honour. Whether we win or lose we have been recognised for the work that we do.

“We are very much looking forward to attending the ceremony with some of our young people and giving them an experience of a lifetime.”

Clare Balding said: “I’m so looking forward to hosting these awards and giving everyone the chance to celebrate the substantial achievements of our fabulously diverse community across a whole range of industries, businesses and charities.

“It’s an important spotlight on those who make the world a better place for the full rainbow of society.”
