A rallying cry has gone out to help a children’s pre-school in the Holme Valley.

Lane Pre-school in Upperthong has been based in a portable building on Burnlee Road for the last 25 years but work needs doing both on the outside and the inside, including tidying up the garden and putting down new paving slabs.

The aim now is to get as much work done as possible this summer and it starts with a fundraiser this Saturday, July 13, at The Farmers Arms on Liphill Bank Road, Holmfirth.

The event from 1pm to 5pm features pocket money stalls, a bouncy castle, a tombola and a raffle featuring lots of great stuff donated by Holme Valley businesses including restaurant and bar vouchers, hampers, flowers, football and rugby shirts.

This will be followed by a big clean-up weekend on August 3 and 4 when people are urged to rally round and spend time at the club decorating it inside, cleaning up the garden and laying new paving slabs.

Fundraising committee chair Tracy Quayle said: “The main problem we have is the cladding which needs replacing with new. The support we’ve had from local businesses providing raffle prizes has been amazing and a company is giving us free paving slabs.”

The pre-school has 24 children and has recently become a registered charity.

The fundraising committee is planning a scarecrow festival in the village in autumn to raise more funds.

Anyone who can help or wants to volunteer for the big clean-up weekend on August 3 and 4 should contact Tracy on 07539 831952.
