Young boxer Florence Mangeni has triumphed at Europe’s largest amateur boxing event.

Florence, who boxes out of Huddersfield-based Gladiators Boxing Academy, won gold in the Haringey Box Cup at Alexandra Palace in London last week.

Florence defeated two very experienced fighters to make the final where she beat Norwegian international Anabelle Bruun to take the gold medal.

This season alone Florence has achieved the following: National Senior Development Champion; NABGC National Champion; Yorkshire Challenge Belt Holder; and Women’s Winter Box Cup gold.

Coach Den Doyle said Florence was the first ever Haringey gold medallist from Huddersfield and added: “This is a dream come true for Florence who is an inspiration to all the kids.

“Florence trains six days a week and eats, sleeps and lives for her boxing. She is now one step closer to achieving her Olympics dream.”

While the Paris Olympics this summer will come too soon, Florence will have an England assessment on July 13.

There was more success at Haringey for Gladiators Boxing Academy as University of Huddersfield physiotherapy student Wayde Griffin, fresh from winning the British Universities and College Sports title, came away with a bronze medal.
