Huddersfield Lawn Tennis and Squash Club’s latest match against Queens 2 from Halifax saw commanding performances from HLTSC No1 and No2 Ben Emery and Dan Lawton.
First up for Huddersfield was Ian Smith who battled against Queens 2’s Russell Bowker in what turned out to be the closest match of the night.
Smith had some tough calls from the local referee and there was much physical contact from Bowker. Bowker took the first game 12-14 and then Smith bounced back 13-11.
The third game went the way of Bowker 8-11 and in the final game despite Smith leading 10-9, a few lucky nicks gave Bowker a couple of points to nudge him ahead and squeeze the game 10-12.
Final score Smith 1-3 Bowker
In the second match Dan Lawton took on Greg Bedford. Each game was close to begin with but Lawton had phenomenal court coverage to retrieve shots that most people would have given up on. This court coverage and accuracy of shot selection meant Lawton came out a 3-0 winner.
Final score Lawton 3-0 Bedford
In what was the deciding match Ben Emery of HLTSC took on Luke Suthers at No1 seed. Emery was imperious in his boasts and drives. His court coverage was superior to Suthers’ especially at the front where the Huddersfield man gained many of his points.
Emery got off to a flyer winning the first five points in game 1 and never looked back, winning that 11-3. The second game followed a similar line with him comfortably taking it 11-5.
In the third game Suthers was nip and tuck for the first half of the game but Emery then put the match to bed with some ease winning the game 11-6.
Final score Emery 3-0 Suthers
HLTSC take the bonus 3 points courtesy of the win and whilst they didn’t take maximum points they still retain top spot in the league. Next up is an away fixture at Skelmanthorpe.
Overall match score 10-3 to Huddersfield.
