Two goals by Ash Flynn and one from Buddy Cox meant Golcar United kept their unbeaten start to the season going.

Flynn has now scored eight goals in four games for United since signing for the club at the start of the season.

Flynn’s goals helped Golcar demolish Atherton 3-0 on a blustery Tuesday night at the Skye Direct Stadium.

It was the home side who started brightly with Flynn having a chance to score in the first five minutes. The Atherton keeper Jack Buckley saved Flynn’s shot low to his left.

Buckley then made another key save in the 10th minute when a cross-cum-shot was fired in by the United attack.

With half an hour gone the game was pretty even. Atherton’s Travis Boyles then went on a mazy solo run and nearly scored. However Golcar’s keeper Graham McLachlan was equal to the shot on goal.

That was the last real chance of the half with the teams going into the break tied at 0-0.

Golcar had a very early chance in the second half. A wicked ball in from deep from Joe Skarz created an opportunity for Flynn at the back post. This however was well defended by Atherton.

The home side then opened the scoring when Flynn picked the ball up 20 yards from goal and arrowed a low drive into the far left corner in the 65th minute.

Things got even better for the Weavers seven minutes later when Cox scored. After swiveling on the half turn he smashed the ball into the corner to make it 2-0.

The game ended as a contest just ten minutes later when Flynn grabbed his second and Golcar’s third on the night.

The victory leaves Golcar in second place in the North West Counties Division One North. They have collected 13 points from five games, drawing one and winning four fixtures.

They next play Garstang away on August 25 (7.45pm).
