Following the Wimbledon championships, Huddersfield will host its very own tennis tournament at Huddersfield Lawn Tennis & Squash Club. People come from far and wide to play at the event which is one of the biggest to be played in the area.
This year the 2022 Huddersfield Open tennis tournament, sponsored by local firm Fruity Pots, starts on Sunday July 10 and runs until Saturday July 16.
Last year the tournament was a great success with the Huddersfield club winning the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) award for the best run tournament in the Yorkshire region.
This year the club is expecting record entries and in particular the junior events that range from age groups under 8 to under 18 years of age for both boys and girls’ categories.
You may have heard or seen on TV a player by the name of Paul Jubb at Wimbledon this year, a men’s top ranked Great Britain player. Paul was a past junior champion at the Huddersfield event only a few years ago which illustrates the standard of the junior competition.
Huddersfield Lawn Tennis & Squash Club chairman Peter Emsell said: “Spectators are most welcome to come along and there is no charge for entry.
“The newly-refurbished bar and coffee lounge is open to the public and food is available. Once the category draws are completed the fixtures will be issued on the club website. Or you can contact the club office on 01484 422541 to find out more.
“We are once again excited this event has come around and we are hoping for record figures this year. Wimbledon really puts tennis at the front of people’s minds and so it’s the perfect time to hold our tournament.”
