Two Huddersfield sports centres will see facilities closed until March to save costs on energy bills.

Kirklees Active Leisure (KAL), a not-for-profit charitable organisation which runs 12 leisure and fitness sites across Kirklees, has been under financial pressure since the pandemic.

Now it has announced three temporary closures which will see Deighton Sports Arena and Batley Sports and Recreation Centre closed completely and the swimming pool at Colne Valley Leisure Centre in Slaithwaite closed. The gym and other ‘dry’ facilities at Colne Valley will remain open.

The closures will start from December 16 and run until the end of March 2023 when the situation will be reviewed.

KAL’s other sites – including Huddersfield Leisure Centre and Stadium Health & Fitness Club at the John Smith’s Stadium – will operate as normal over the coming months.

Customers who use the affected facilities will be contacted to provide further details around their options and how to contact KAL. Further details of the changes will be available on KAL’s website at: kal.org.uk.

A spokesperson for KAL said: “We fully appreciate this decision will be disappointing for KAL staff and our customers. KAL would like to thank them all for their support and understanding in these challenging circumstances.

“Despite the temporary closures, KAL continues to provide a fantastic range of activities across our facilities and remains the largest provider of high-quality leisure facilities in the Kirklees area.”
