Huddersfield Town’s Memorial Garden has been shortlisted for a prestigious award.

The riverside garden at the John Smith’s Stadium was inspired by the late Terriers fan Daryl Hopson and was opened in February this year.

The garden has been chosen as a finalist for the Community Project Award at TheStadiumBusiness Design & Development Awards 2024.

Since 2017, the awards have recognised the best in venue design, development, construction and refurbishment across the global sports and entertainment sector.

The club’s Memorial Garden has been shortlisted for its design and location, how it’s engaged the local community and the impact it has had.

The awards will be announced at a ceremony on Tuesday December 3 2024 at the Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester.

Head of supporter experience Robyn Kennerdale said: “We are incredibly proud of our Memorial Garden and of the undeniable impact it has had on our staff, supporters and those in our community in the short time it has been open.

“To be recognised amongst global leaders in the sport and entertainment world is a great achievement and our thanks go to all those companies and individuals who supported our vision in turning the garden from an idea into a reality.”

Fundraising for the garden, down by the River Colne, was started by former Town owner Dean Hoyle and his wife Janet when they cycled to Wembley for the play-off final in 2022.

The garden, completed with support from Town’s new owner and chairman Kevin Nagle, was officially opened by Daryl’s sister Chelsea, alongside Town ambassador Andy Booth and club chaplains Dudley Martin and Phil Gedye.

Daryl – or Daz to his mates – died after a battle with stomach cancer in 2022 at the age of 31.

Town fans are able to have inscribed brass plaques dedicated to loved ones and installed in the garden.

Mr Nagle said at the time: “We don’t forget anyone who we recognise as a fellow Terrier, whether they’re by our side or no longer with us. I hope this area gives peace and comfort to those who need it most.”

Garry Scott Groundworks, Landscaping and Maintenance, One17Design and Taylor Bros were involved in the design and construction.
