Why I Work In… is a regular feature, kindly sponsored by Huddersfield-based recruitment firm Stafflex, where we ask people about their jobs and the industry they work in. This time it’s Jen Vittanuova, clinical nurse director of Jen Vittanuova Medical Aesthetics with a flagship clinic in Huddersfield.

Tell us a bit about Jen Vittanuova Medical Aesthetics

Jen Vittanuova Medical Aesthetics is a luxury aesthetic clinic that I personally founded over 14 years ago, driven by a passion for helping patients enhance their natural beauty through safe and cutting-edge treatments. Our clinic offers a range of non-surgical cosmetic procedures, including advanced injectables, skin rejuvenation, and skincare solutions tailored to each client’s individual needs. With over 24 years of experience in cosmetic and plastic surgery, I ensure that every treatment is delivered with precision, care, and the highest standards of safety.

At Jen Vittanuova Medical Aesthetics, our focus is not only on achieving excellent results but also on building long-term relationships with our patients, ensuring they feel confident, empowered, and happy with their care. Our commitment to innovation, education, and patient-centred service has allowed us to grow and establish a strong reputation both locally and internationally.

What is your role?

As the Clinical Nurse Director at Jen Vittanuova Medical Aesthetics, I oversee all clinical operations, ensuring that our treatments meet the highest standards of safety, care, and effectiveness. In addition to managing the clinic, I also work directly with patients as the Designated Medical Prescriber, performing advanced medical treatments such as injectable procedures, laser skin rejuvenation, and bespoke skin solutions. My role allows me to combine my extensive experience in cosmetic and plastic surgery with a hands-on approach to patient care, providing personalised treatment plans and overseeing the medical protocols that ensure optimal results for every patient.

How long have you worked as an medical aesthetics nurse?

I have been working in the cosmetic surgery and medical aesthetics industry for the past 24 years. My career began in the NHS, where I gained valuable surgical experience in Head and Neck Surgery (ENT/Maxillofacial Surgery), as well as Breast and Bowel Surgery. I transitioned into cosmetic surgery, working with several of the top cosmetic surgery companies, which provided me with a solid foundation in both surgical and non-surgical aesthetic treatments.

For the past 14 years, I have been running my own clinic, which has allowed me to bring my expertise directly to my patients and expand my passion for medical aesthetics. Also, I have recently started working as an Expert Witness in the field of medical aesthetics and cosmetic surgery, leveraging my years of experience to provide insights and guidance in legal cases.

What advice would you give someone who wanted to either start a career in aesthetics and/or set up their own business?

My first piece of advice for anyone wanting to enter the field of aesthetics is to ensure that they are a qualified medical professional. The medical aesthetics industry requires a deep understanding of anatomy, safety protocols, and the ability to handle potential complications. Whether you are a nurse, doctor, or dentist, having a strong medical foundation is crucial to delivering safe, effective treatments.

For those looking to set up their own aesthetics business, I would also say to be prepared for the business side! Running a clinic is not just about delivering treatments. You’ll need to understand marketing, business management, and finance to grow your business. Don’t hesitate to seek professional advice in these areas if needed.

If you could describe your job in three words, what would they be?

Empowering, Transformative, Rewarding.

These three words encapsulate my role. I strive to empower my patients by enhancing their natural beauty, facilitate transformative changes in their confidence and appearance, and find immense personal and professional rewards in witnessing the positive impact of our treatments on their lives.

What do you love most about your job?

What I love most about my job is the ability to make a meaningful impact on people’s lives. Each day, I have the privilege of helping patients enhance their self-esteem and confidence through personalised aesthetic treatments. The transformation I witness – both physically and emotionally – reminds me of why I chose this career.

I also appreciate the opportunity to work in a constantly evolving field, which allows me to stay engaged and inspired. The relationships I build with my patients and the satisfaction that comes from delivering exceptional care are truly what drives my passion for medical aesthetics.

What word would your patients use to describe you?

I believe my patients would describe me as approachable. While I maintain a strong focus on delivering high-quality aesthetic care, I also strive to create a welcoming and friendly environment. My sense of humour helps put patients at ease, making their experience enjoyable and comfortable. Building a rapport with patients is essential to my practice, and I think they appreciate that I blend professionalism with a touch of fun.

Where do you hope your career might take you?

I hope my career will continue to evolve in ways that allow me to share my expertise and passion for medical aesthetics with a broader audience. Recently, I had the honour of presenting at the British Association of Medical Aesthetic Nurses Conference, and I’ve already been booked for more speaking engagements.

In addition to public speaking, I aim to further develop educational programs and workshops for medical aesthetics professionals, sharing best practices and fostering a culture of safety and excellence in the industry. I also envision collaborating with industry leaders on innovative treatments and technologies that can enhance patient outcomes.

Ultimately, I aspire to continue influencing the field of medical aesthetics positively while inspiring others to pursue their passions in this rewarding profession.
