Three games in six days seemed to take its toll as Golcar United went out of the FA Cup with a 1-0 home defeat against Thackley.
The Weavers got off to a bright start, big centre-back Shane Killock won a header from an Ollie Russon setpiece in the opening two minutes but no one could get a final touch.
Russon was involved again in the fifth minute, his curling shot was deflected behind by a Thackley defender. From the resulting corner, Killock went close but his header cannoned off the crossbar.
Chances were few and far between after that but Sam Kelly made an excellent diving save to deny the visitors just after the half hour mark.
Into the second half and Thackley grabbed what proved to be the only goal. A dubious free-kick decision against Nicky Clee resulted in the visitors taking advantage as Ben Grech-Brooksbank’s volley left Kelly with no chance.
Golcar had to chase the game but fatigue after playing three games in six days was beginning to show.
It was made apparent when striker George Doyle had the ball on the edge of the box and instead of shooting his legs just seemed to just collapse underneath him.
Kiero Lawrence had a golden opportunity to equalise for the village, the ball bounced over the line of defence and Lawrence was there to pounce with the goal at his mercy, but he couldn’t finish and dragged his shot just wide.
A few more chances and some great defending and goalkeeping from Thackley meant that they held on to the result and progressed into the next round of the cup.
Golcar’s next game is on Saturday August 24 in the FA Vase against New Mills at the Skye Direct Stadium.
