The new-look Huddersfield Bus Station could have an amazing ‘living grass roof’, a health and vaccination clinic and a GP’s surgery under plans out for consultation.

West Yorkshire Combined Authority is working with Kirklees Council on ambitious plans for a new bus station to provide a “modern and attractive gateway” into Huddersfield.

It is part of a £32 million package of transport improvements in the town.

The bus station could have a stunning canopy over the main entrance, a living ‘green’ roof with grass or other planting, solar panels and an e-bike hire store.

A series of images of what the new bus station could look like have been published as part of a public consultation.

Local people can browse the plans and take a survey giving their views on the proposals.

Public consultation runs until September 12 with final designs and planning permission being sought in 2022 with works due to take place in 2023.

Huddersfield Bus Station is down-at-heel and dated but, before the pandemic, was one of the busiest bus stations in West Yorkshire with more than 37,000 passengers a day.

Tracy Brabin, Mayor of West Yorkshire, said: “In my manifesto, I committed to improving public transport, connecting more people with opportunities and helping tackle the climate emergency on our way to becoming a net zero carbon economy by 2038.

“That is why I am delighted people are being given the opportunity to shape these plans to transform Huddersfield Bus Station.”

Clr Peter McBride, Cabinet member for regeneration at Kirklees Council, said: “I am pleased to see that the people of Kirklees have yet another opportunity to shape the future of our town centres.

“The transformation of Huddersfield Bus Station is a vital step to improving connectivity in the town and complements our ambitious Blueprint plans. I encourage people to take a look at the plans and have their say on this exciting development.”

These proposals are part of a wider package to make it easier for people to travel in and around Huddersfield by bus, train, bike and on foot.

The schemes are being delivered with money from the Leeds City Region Transforming Cities Fund, which is helping to transform gateways to towns and cities across the region by making it easier to walk, cycle and use public transport, and match funding from Kirklees Council.
