Huddersfield Laund Hill RUFC are growing their Roses teams with the aim of getting more women and girls playing the game.
This coming season the club will have three Roses teams, the 1XV, an under-14s and an under-12s. And that’s not including the host of younger girls who play in the mixed minis teams.
The under-14s won the coveted Laund Hill Team of the Year trophy back in April, becoming the top team in the whole club – male or female.
Director of rugby Andy Appleby said: “We are destroying the myth that rugby is just for boys. Our girls can play – and so can you!”
Andy said the Roses under-14s were the first female team to win the overall club award and wouldn’t be the last.
He said the team’s end-of-season stats were impressive and added: “They started the season with six registered players and ended it with 19.
“Since Christmas, when they really got into their stride, they scored in excess of 120 tries and conceded only eight. And of those eight, five were actually scored by Roses players when they were making up numbers for the opposition!”
The Roses under-14s are also going on tour to Paris to compete in the World Games in June/July 2025.
Andy added: “All of our girls and women have a passion for the sport, an incredible camaraderie and a fantastic bond with one another and across the Roses teams.
“Many of the 1XV help to coach the under-14 and under-12 sides, and turn out in force to support the girls at their games. The girls return the favour and turn out en masse to support the 1XV also.”
