The Huddersfield Tennis Open at Huddersfield Lawn Tennis and Squash Club attracts players from across Britain. Competitors this year travelled from as far as Sussex and the north of Scotland to play in the prestigious grade 3 competition.
The Huddersfield tournament always attracts some of the best talent around. To give an example Luke Johnson won the Huddersfield men’s singles open in 2018 and this year he took part in the men’s doubles at Wimbledon with Anton Matusevich. So have we seen a future champion? Time will tell.
Although the Huddersfield tournament was limited to 16 players per age group due to Covid restrictions the competition was fierce. Children from as young as eight years old took part. The oldest junior was 18 and then there was a men’s and women’s open event.
Next year the club are hoping to put the numbers back up to 32 players per age group.

Just short of 300 people competed at the event and all of them are ranked in the top 120 in the country for their age groups.
On the success of the tournament HLTSC member Becky Lee said: “The event was brilliant and it’s fantastic that this calibre of tennis tournament can still be held by us in Huddersfield. It’s a really big thing and you get to see youngsters that might one day go on to win things, they are just so talented.
“There were over 458 matches played throughout the week, that works out at 829 sets and 5,478 games. That’s a lot of tennis!”
