Golcar will be the focus for music, history, fun and food on its annual celebration day … and a flypast by a World War Two fighter.
The ever-popular Golcar Lily Day on Saturday, May 11, will take over the entire village and also feature games, crafts, exhibitions, classic cars and lots of brass bands.
It starts at 10am and goes right through to teatime and, if the weather is fine, a Hurricane or Spitfire fighter from the 1940s should swoop low over the Colne Valley during the afternoon.
A procession through the village led by Slaithwaite Band sets off from the Golcar Conservative Club car park on Knowl Road at 1.30pm to Town End. People are urged to take part in fancy dress.
One of the main entertainment hubs will be Town End in the centre of Golcar featuring loads of stalls and games but several historical re-enactments will be held on Manor Road school field along with bungee trampolines, a bouncing dome and slide plus tractor and trailer rides.
Re-enactment groups at an arena on the field include WW2 French Resistance (11am), Medieval re-enactment by Normanis Shire Court (11.30am), Sealed Knot English Civil War (11.50am), weapons through the ages (12.10pm), Durham Light Infantry from World War Two (12.30pm), 33rd Foot Napoleonic Firing Display (12.50pm), Sealed Knot display and kids pike drill (2pm), Durham Light Infantry (2.30pm), Normanis arming of the knight and combat (3pm), 33rd Foot display and have a go at musket drill (3.30pm), marching through history parade featuring all the re-enactors (4pm).

Music at Town End will be Huddersfield Wind Band (10am-11am), The Big Sing Choir (11am to 12noon and in St John’s Church if wet), Golcar Band (12.15pm-1.15pm), Slaithwaite Band (2pm to 2.45pm), Huddersfield and Ripponden Band (3pm-4pm).
St John’s Church will feature indie folk pop band Fishing For Compliments from 1pm-2pm and Sundown Swing big band at 2.30pm.
Providence Methodist Church on Knowl Road will feature the True Talent Theatre School (11.30am-12.30pm), Honley Ladies Choir (1.30pm-3pm) and Vintage Brass Band (3.15pm-4.15pm).
Other entertainment in the village includes maypole dancing at 12noon, the Starlight Dance Troop at 12.30pm and belly dancers at 2pm with Morris dancing throughout the day.
Classic cars will be on show at Thorpe Green Bowling Club on Leymoor Road where people can also have a go at bowling.
Colne Valley Museum will be open from 10am to 5pm featuring traditional craft demonstrations, an art exhibition, children’s crafts, bread-baking and its tearoom will be open.

Golcar library will have leaflets so people can explore Golcar’s ginnels and activities in the library will include face-painting and juggling.
Golcar Scout and Community Centre on Manor Road will have lots of crafts which people can have a go at, biscuit decorating, face painting, a conservation trail around the village and the Winkle Club’s beer tent and gin bar.
Food will be served in St John’s Church, Providence Methodist, the scout and community centre, Thorpe Green Bowling Club and Colne Valley Museum with barbecues at Town End and Golcar Scout and Community Centre. There will be a pizza van, an Indian food van and all the usual Golcar food outlets and pubs will be open.
There is no parking in the centre of Golcar on the day but a park and ride bus will run from Scapegoat Hill Baptist Church where there is plenty of parking in the village.
Disabled parking will be allowed at Golcar Scout and Community Centre.
The name Golcar Lily Day originates from the fact that the Lily of the Valley flower grew widely throughout the Colne Valley before the Industrial Revolution.
On Sunday, May 12, there will be a service of thanksgiving at St John’s Church with Colne Valley Male Voice Choir singing in the church at 2.30pm.
