A long-standing group of Huddersfield artists have a new exhibition opening at the Media Centre on Monday January 15.
The artists are all members of The Making Space and their exhibition showcases a wide variety of work ranging from textiles to photography and even a handmade beekeeping suit.
The Making Space is a co-operatively run workshop and materials store based in the Media Centre, where people with a wide range of practical skills from crafts to digital technology work side by side, share their knowledge and collaborate.
In 2024 the group is celebrating 10 years of The Making Space and their current exhibition is one of a series of events to mark this milestone.
A book will be published later in the year which brings together a collection of short essays and photographs documenting the extensive reach and impact The Making Space has had in Huddersfield over the last decade.
The exhibition at the Media Centre is curated by Making Space member Helen Williams. Helen’s artwork is well known in Huddersfield through her dramatic installations using the full height of the Byram Arcade atrium. These pieces have become the most important public art currently being made in the town centre.
“The founding principle of The Making Space is that collaborations generate new knowledge,” said Helen.
“It might take the form of artworks, social value or new business opportunities and we think that hands-on making, regardless of the material, is the best vehicle for the process.”
The Making Space exhibition is at the Media Centre, Northumberland Street, Huddersfield, from January 15 for seven weeks. Opening times are 9am-5pm Monday-Friday, closed Saturday and Sunday.
