Forget Dick Dastardly and Muttley, wacky racers are coming to Huddersfield town centre.
Huddersfield BID is urging businesses to back plans for the Yorkshire Soapbox Race in September.
Soapbox cars are homemade, engine-less vehicles that race against the clock – or eachother – on a downhill circuit.
Competition can be very fierce as rivals pit their engineering skills against eachother.
Huddersfield BID want businesses and other organisations to take part and also want business sponsorship for what promises to be an exciting event.
The race will take place on Sunday, September 19 and organisers hope shops normally closed on a Sunday will open their doors and take advantage of the extra footfall in the town centre.
Huddersfield BID is planning to publish booklets to hand out on the day, showcasing businesses and offers. There will also be promotion on the LoyalFree App.
Competitors must be over 18 and a place in the race can be secured with a £50 deposit. Each soapbox must not have an engine but must have working brakes and the driver must wear a helmet. The vehicle can’t have more than four wheels.
Huddersfield BID manager Sam Sharp said: “This is an exciting event to put Huddersfield on the map as THE place to take part in a soapbox race in Yorkshire. It will bring the whole town alive and provide a full day of entertainment, thrills and great offers.”
Huddersfield BID marketing and projects executive Sophie Patel added: “We have put together simple instructions on how to build your soapbox which can be found on the BID website.
“My only advice would be stick to the terms and conditions. However, be as wacky and creative with your soapbox and team costumes as you like. Most importantly enjoy yourselves. This is the soapbox event you do not want to miss. It could be mind-blowing!”
Good afternoon,
I am struggling to find anything about this event, the whereabouts, the time, cost to attend? I would like to participate next year if this is going to be an annual thing. I only just discovered this yesterday, sadly.
I look forward to finding out more and attending.
Kind regards
Sam
I have searched for details of this event but I can only find how to enter a soapbox!
Does anyone know what times? Is there a spectator charge? Is it still running?
