An ambassador for next year’s European capital of culture is to play Marsden Mechanics Hall.
The Estonian city of Tartu is the culture capital in 2024 and Estonian slide guitarist and songwriter Andres Roots will be in Marsden on Sunday, December 3, at 8pm.
The show is in association with Huddersfield Blues Club and Andres’ appearance in Huddersfield follows the release of his new album, Vol 12, in March 2023.
Huddersfield-based blues musician Pat Fulgoni said: “Andres’ predominantly acoustic, instrumental record has evoked comparisons with not just the heyday of Mississippi Delta Blues but also with Davy Graham, Leo Kottke, Ry Cooder – and even acoustic Led Zeppelin.”
American jazz critic Ted Gioia added: “It’s almost as if Muddy Waters was flowing into the Gulf of Riga. Musicians of this sort run counter to all expectations and upset various purists.”
Andres first visited the UK with his then-band Bullfrog Brown in December 2006 and has since performed everywhere from London to Shetland.
His music has received airplay on five continents and his 2016 LP Roots Music remains the only blues album ever to top the sales charts in the Baltics.
