Holmfirth-based community interest company fairandfunky has been chosen to get funding from Holmfirth’s Co-operative store for its work with young people on climate action over the next 12 months.
The Co-op Local Community Fund has supported over 30,000 local community projects across the UK since its launch in 2016. When Co-operative members buy certain Co-op branded products and services and use their blue Co-op membership card at the checkout, 1p from every pound spent goes to support local causes.
Sophie Root from fairandfunky CIC said: “As you can imagine, the last few years have been really challenging for small organisations such as ours. The pandemic has drastically affected our work with young people so we are extremely grateful to have this partnership with our local Co-op.
“We’re urging local members to choose fairandfunky as their cause so we can deliver our climate action project and work with more young people in the Holme Valley and surrounding areas.”
The project, funded by the Local Community Fund and run by fairandfunky, will set up a festival with green activities aimed at young people.
Rebecca Birkbeck, director of community and member participation at Co-op, said: “Co-op is committed to making a real and tangible difference in our local communities while creating significant value for members through our membership scheme.
“Our Local Community Fund is more relevant than ever as the cost-of-living crisis is making it incredibly challenging for many local organisations. We know that our members want to support the communities they live in and Co-op membership is a powerful way for people to do this, simply by shopping at Co-op.”
Based in Holmfirth, fairandfunky CIC delivers workshops in schools and with community groups on key global themes such as recycling, Fairtrade and the environment. They have been doing this for almost 11 years.
fairandfunky will benefit from being chosen as a community cause from October 2023 through to October 2024.
