A cycling club for blind and partially-sighted people is planning a 100mph challenge – but it’s not all about speed.
Kirklees-based Tandem Trekkers is a club which helps people with sight problems ride a tandem with a sighted rider – or pilot – up front.
On Saturday September 2, members of the group aim to ride 100 miles in an hour around the athletics track at Leeds Road playing fields in Huddersfield.
Tandems will be circulating the track a total of 400 times, the equivalent of 100 miles, between 9.30am and 10.30am.
The aim of the ride is to provide much-needed funds for the club and a target of £1,000 has been set.
Club chairman Steve Draycott said: “We have running costs approaching £7,000 per year in order to provide tandem rides every weekend between the start of March and the end of November for our 80 members. We can take a maximum of 15 tandems on each ride.
“We’d love for people to sponsor our challenge and anyone can come along on the day to cheer us on. Anything that you can give will be much appreciated.”
The group, which recently moved from Huddersfield to Mirfield, grew out of the former Kirklees Visual Impairment Network – now called Outlookers – and was so successful it set itself up as a charity.
