Did you or somebody you know attend the secret music movement ‘Daytimers’ back in the late 1980s or 1990s?
The underground Bhangra scene was a place where young British Asians could hang out and dance to home-grown Bhangra music in a relaxed environment.
Taking place in broad daylight, Daytimers was a huge cultural movement in Britain happening across the UK, including places such as Huddersfield, Bradford, Leeds and London, producing a new generation of world-class DJs.
Kirklees-based theatre company Chol are calling out to any former Daytimer ravers who attended the events back in the day to share their stories.
Chol are looking for memories, footage and photographs to inspire their new play ‘Daytimers’ which will be performed in September 2023 as part of Huddersfield’s High Street Heritage Action Zone (HSHAZ) cultural programme.
The play will be a tribute to Bhangra Daytimers and the community that has supported the events over the years, and a celebration of the diversity of Huddersfield’s community.
The Bhangra Daytimer events were a significant part of Huddersfield’s cultural heritage, bringing people together to celebrate music and dance and form friendships.
Chol would like to gather as many stories as possible to inspire a play that truly represents the community’s experience, whether that’s a love story, funny memories or tales of friendship.
Chol are looking for community cast members to perform in the show. You don’t need to have any acting or dance experience, and there is no obligation to take part in the final performance.
