A family-run construction firm has won a regional award for extension work on a ‘challenging’ property.
Milnsbridge-based Peter Armitage Ltd won the Medium Renovation Project in the Yorkshire and Trent region in the Federation of Master Builders’ (FMB) 2023 Master Builder Awards.
The company now goes through to the national Master Builder Awards finals in September.
The awards recognise excellence in the region’s small and medium-sized construction companies and are run by the FMB, the largest trade association in the UK construction sector.
The completed extension at a house in Barkisland provides a new living area for a growing family with superb views across the Calder Valley.
Its modern, flat-roofed design contrasts yet nestles with the rural appearance of the original three-storey home and the glazed frontages and skylights provide a light and airy interior.
Many challenges were overcome during the project with the formation of a large opening into the existing property that required the use of a designed propping scheme to hold up the remaining two storeys of rubble-filled masonry walling above.
This had to be designed to not only carry the weight above but to also enable the insertion of the supporting steelwork. Various sections of underpinning also had to be carried out to the existing structure following the discovery of unsuitable foundations.
The merging of the new extension to the old property was achieved with the use of locally sourced reclaimed stone, pointed off with an unobtrusive flush finish.

“Achievements such as this cannot be attained without the diligent and attentive work that is carried out by our dedicated staff members and sub-contractors and mention must also be given to our clients Darren and Kate, who it was a pleasure to work for and with.”

If Peter Armitage Ltd wins the overall national Master Builder Awards title, which is selected from all national category winners, the firm will drive away in a new Isuzu D-Max Utah Pick Up truck worth more than £37,000.
