Down for the Count All-Stars are bringing their A Century of Swing tour to the Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield on Wednesday October 19.
Down for the Count All-Stars are a mini big band who bring the sounds of the Swing Era back to life, with an electrifying show full of incredible energy and musicianship.
Described as “a breath of fresh air on the swing scene” they are now regularly found at jazz clubs in the UK and abroad including Ronnie Scott’s in London and Le Caveau de la Huchette in Paris.
Band leader Mike Paul-Smith described the show as “a whistle-stop tour of the best swing music” and added: “We trace the origins of the music from 1920s America through to the genre’s heyday in the 30s, 40s and 50s.
“You can expect to hear instrumental songs from the likes of Duke Ellington and Glenn Miller and vocal classics from singers such as Nat ‘King’ Cole and Ella Fitzgerald.”
The show also brings swing music up to date, with brand new arrangements of jazz standards written by Mike and trumpeter Simon Joyner, which will feature on a new album to be released this autumn to accompany the tour.
An important part of the show is the friendship and camaraderie amongst the musicians on stage. “The band started out 18 years ago when a group of friends came together to play music,” said Mike.
“As people have come and gone in the band over the years, we’ve retained that strong bond of friendship and we think that really comes across to the audiences.”
