Huddersfield Town Women bid an emotional farewell to three long standing players in their final fixture of the 2021-22 season. Vicky Abbott, Laura Carter and Katie Stanley have all made their final appearance for the club.
Carter, a goalkeeper, departs Town after a 23-year career between the sticks for the Terriers. Abbott has played for four different clubs but ends her 25-year career at her beloved Town. Meanwhile Katie Stanley ends her decade of association at the club too.
Writing on Twitter Carter said: “Where it all started over 20 years ago, today is the day, it’s time to hang up the gloves. I have made the best memories at this club and made the bestest friends for life. It is going to be an emotional last day as a Terrier.”
Abbott tweeted: “The best years spent at such a special club with the most amazing people, many of which I’m lucky enough to call friends for life.
“I am so grateful to spend such a long time at the club and finish playing with the greatest bunch of girls! Forever a proud Terrier!”
Stanley, too, posted her goodbyes on social media saying: “A lifetime of football and a decade as a Terrier. The time has come to finally hang up the boots.
“I have been fortunate to share the field with some amazing players making memories and friends for life. I have an amazing family who have trailed me around the country since a young age and been patient in support of my football journey.
“I will be forever grateful. It has been with great pride that I represented Huddersfield Town Women and it’s an honour to bow out captaining the side. I look forward to watching the club go from strength to strength.”
Town were defeated 2-1 by already relegated Hull City on Sunday at the Stafflex Arena.
The Tigers took an early lead when a long-range strike from Helen Lynskey flew over Carter in goal. Lynskey struck again to make it 2-0 shortly afterwards. Town pulled one back through top scorer Laura Elford to make it 2-1 and that’s how it finished.
The Terriers ended the campaign in 6th position on 43 points.
