Match For Heroes 3, which took place at Golcar United’s Skye Direct Stadium on Sunday, has been hailed a huge success with early estimates suggesting that over £10,000 has been raised for two charities.
The annual event is organised by a band of volunteers led by Jonathan Horsman and is held in memory of Meltham soldier Tom Wroe and colleague Sgt Gareth Thursby who were killed on duty in Afghanistan in 2012. Money is raised for Help for Homeless Veterans and Yorkshire Regiment Benevolent Trust.
Match for Heroes 3 saw three matches played with Huddersfield Town legends including Marcus Stewart, Chris Billy, Darren Bullock, Efe Sodje, Dean Gorre, Matt Glennon, Rob Edwards and Clyde Wijnhard take on a Golcar United legends team.
There were two other matches played on the day, the 1st Battalion Yorkshire Regiment v West Yorkshire Police and an Army Veterans team took on a side from the Supporting Charities FC.
Mr Horsman said: “What a fantastic day it was, and we have raised a lot of money for two brilliant charities. The support the day received was amazing. I have to say a massive thank you to all the sponsors, supporters, cadets, players and to Golcar United.”
Sunday’s event was a 1,400-sell-out and such was the success it could return to Golcar next year.
Huddersfield Hub photographer SEAN DOYLE was there to capture the action.
