Into the Spotlight, sponsored by Huddersfield-based Scriba PR, is a weekly feature which highlights some great businesses. Here, we introduce Fixby House Nursery in Fixby which has ambitions to be the best.
A new nursery in Huddersfield is a family business in more ways than one.
Brit Hazelden, 25, has taken over an existing day nursery in Netheroyd Hill Road, Fixby, and has invested £200,000 on a top to bottom refurbishment.
The nursery has also changed its name and rebranded to become Fixby House Nursery.
Brit’s mum Karen runs Almond House Nursery in Almondbury and Triangle House Nursery in Halifax where Brit learned all about the industry – starting when she was still at school.
Brit, who has also just qualified as an Ofsted inspector, will be joint manager with Charlie Seed, whose own two daughters aged one and three are both cared for at Fixby House Nursery.
Brit said: “We saw the business online and I just fell in love with the building and its location.
“We knew it was going to take some work and since we took over on January 10 we’ve spent over £200,000 on the renovations.
“The place was looking really tired and we’ve decorated the entire building, put in new play areas, redone the foyer and brought in some lovely new furniture. We are really passionate about what we do and we want it to be the best we can make it.”
The Hazelden family are steeped in the nursery business and Brit said: “I’ve been a part of it my entire life.
“I’ve grown up with it right from helping out in the school holidays to then getting paid. I studied early years at the University of Huddersfield and it’s always what I have wanted to do. I love children and want to do what’s best for them.”
Brit is also passionate about raising standards and that led to her recent qualification as an Ofsted inspector, which isn’t an easy process.
Brit will work as a freelance inspector but her main focus will be on making a success of Fixby House Nursery.
The nursery currently has 20 children on the roll but it’s registered for 87 so there is plenty of room for growth.
Brit has already increased the staffing levels bringing in Charlie and deputy manager Mary Moran along with new apprentices. Technically the nursery is now “over-staffed” so is ready to cope with any expansion.
From her training with Ofsted Brit can call on the latest in modern best practice but also on her family’s long-standing hands-on experience.

And the family connections are at the heart of what they do. Area manager Lara Ingham, who oversees all three family nurseries, looked after Brit when she was a baby – and Brit herself looked after Lara’s son, who is now 13.
“Hopefully people can see that we really care and want the best for the children we look after,” said Brit.
The refurbishments haven’t finished yet and new windows and doors are still to come. A new garden with separate play areas and a new Wendy house will follow in time for the better weather.
“We want to really grow the business and offer our high standard of care to as many children as possible,” said Brit. “We’re really excited for the future.”
