Eight-year-old Emily Dixon pulled on her Compo-style woolly hat to celebrate naming a new Kirklees garden waste bin lorry after the much-loved Last of the Summer Wine character.

Emily, of Huddersfield, was one of six winners of a Kirklees Council competition to name the new ‘Clip and Collect’ bin wagons.

There were almost 200 entries and a public vote and the winning names have now been applied to the wagons.

Emily and fellow winner Stephanie Buckley, of Moldgreen, visited the council’s Vine Street depot in Huddersfield to see their newly-named lorries. 

On seeing ‘Compo’, Emily said: “His name is short for composting and Compo, the man from Last of the Summer Wine.

“I hope people see him and start to recycle more. We all need to be recycling as much as possible to help save the planet. We need to respect it more.”

Stephanie, meanwhile, named her truck ‘Fill me up Buttercup’ and said: “They all look great. We should all be recycling our garden waste.

“People need to find out and be aware of what they can and cannot recycle or put in their bins. Everyone needs to be thinking about what they can do to look after the planet.”

The other winners were: John Whittaker from Waterloo – The Lawn Ranger; Chris Sheard from Mirfield – Bradley Twiggins; Joe Furniss from Mirfield – Never Bin Better; and Katie Haigh from Mirfield – Forest Dump.

Clr Naheed Mather, Cabinet member for environment, said: “I want to thank all those who entered the competition, the response was quite amazing.

“The six winners came up with some inspiring names all of which look great on the garden waste collection wagons. It will be great to see them on our streets collecting more waste that will be recycled and then reused.”
