Golcar United boss Ash Connor now believes it may be too hard to catch top club Bury AFC as they keep winning and United dropped points to Pilkington last Tuesday night.
The Weavers are now 10 points behind the unbeaten leaders who currently sit top on 72 points from 28 fixtures. Golcar are second on 62 points.
There are now only eight games left in the regular season and boss Connor is concentrating on getting his team to finish as high as possible in the North West Counties Division One North table.
He said: “Bury aren’t losing and we have said it before that if they go unbeaten they deserve to win it. So I now think it will be difficult to catch them.
“It hasn’t just been me saying it but other managers too, when you have a club as big as Bury in the division they are always going to win it. In a normal season it would have been us and Holker Old Boys fighting it out.
“At the beginning of the season we said if we finished in the play-offs that would have been a great effort. I think we are just a few wins off cementing that spot which would be brilliant.
“We can now just aim as high as possible and try to finish as high as we can because the higher you finish we could get home advantage in the play-offs. That would be important for us.”
The Weavers this weekend take on Nelson away. Saturday’s opponents just sit outside the play-off places in seventh and will be keen to press their own promotion ambitions.
Connor knows how tough this game will be and said: “They are a good side who like to score goals. They have won their last two games and sit just outside the play-off places which they will be wanting to get into. We know we’ll have to be at our best to beat them.”

Golcar have drawn their last two games, one to Bacup Borough and one to Pilkington, and whilst Connor was disappointed to not get the three points in either he was proud of the players’ efforts.
He said: “It was clear early on in the Pilkington game that they were happy with a point. If there was any team that was going to win it, it was going to be us.
“The Bacup game probably deserved to be a draw, but when you get a late penalty like we did you anticipate the three points coming your way. We remain in a positive mood and move on to the next game.”
