With the non-league football season ‘curtailed’ 12 Yorkshire clubs – including Emley AFC and Golcar United – are set to take part in a post-season tournament.
The COVID Cup will run from April 13 to May 29 – but is still subject to fans being allowed to attend matches.
The competition has been organised by Brighouse Town and fans voted on Twitter to decide on its name.
COVID Cup edged out the likes of the Yorkshire Isolation Cup, the Unprecedented Cup and the AstraZeneca Cup!
The teams taking part are: Brighouse Town, Golcar United, Emley AFC, Ossett United, Penistone Church, Thackley AFC, Steeton, Silsden, Liversedge, Garforth Town, Campion and Eccleshill United.
Emley AFC chairman Andrew Painten told Huddersfield Hub: “This is a great opportunity to get our players back on the pitch.
“I’d like to thank our friends at Brighouse Town for bringing this to fruition. We’re crossing everything the roadmap continues on track and further advice from the FA means we can welcome fans back to the Fantastic Media Welfare Ground. It has been too long!”
Meanwhile Painten’s counterpart over at Golcar United, Peter Gledhill, said: “We are very excited about playing in this tournament if all goes to plan.
“It will help all the clubs financially but also we can get back to playing football which is great. We’d like to thank Brighouse Town for organising the competition.”
No formal conclusion has been announced yet for the ‘curtailed’ North West Counties League in which both Emley and Golcar play.
