Dave Sykes was the outstanding performer for Huddersfield Lawn Tennis and Squash Club in their second round of fixtures. Sykes won his match 3-1 but it wasn’t enough to win the overall night as HLTSC saw their first defeat of the season.
Huddersfield Lawn Tennis and Squash Club went into their second racketball match of the season on the back of a good win last week.
This week they took on one of the favourites, Queens 1 from Halifax. There were some terrific battles with most of the games being closely fought and many of them could have gone either way but in the end Queens 1 were stronger on the night.
Match 1 3rd Seeds: Dave Sykes (HLTSC) v Greg Bedford
Bedford took the first game as he dominated top shots at front of the court. After that Sykes worked hard and kept the ball longer to take the next two games.
In the fourth game it was incredibly close with Sykes edging it 13-11. Sykes therefore won 3-1
1st Match Scores
7-11, 11-8, 11-6, 13-11.
2nd Match 2nd Seeds: James Smith (HLTSC) v Tyler Simpson
Simpson is both a squash and racketball player and this showed as he was always ahead using his squash skills to great effect especially at the front of the court.
Smith had several game points in the first game but he wasn’t able to take them and this proved decisive. If Smith had taken one of those then the result may have been different.
It was so close in the 2nd and 3rd games with Simpson going from 9-9 in both games to close them out 9-11.
2nd Match Scores
13-15, 9-11, 9-11.
3rd Match 1st Seeds: Dan Lawton (Hltsc) v Martin Calvert
Whilst Calvert started as the favourite for this deciding rubber, it was Lawton who got off to a flyer in the first game.
Then Calvert moved into another gear for the 2nd game and whilst Lawton was ahead 9-7 in the 3rd game, Calvert took 4 points in a row to win the 3rd.
Lawton needed to win the 4th to give him a chance of levelling but Calvert kept the rallies going and whilst both players were flat out it was Queens 1 player who came away the winner 8-11 in the 4th.
3rd Match Score
11-5, 4-11, 9-11, 8-11
Overall Match score 4-10 (1 point for each game won plus bonus 3 points for winning the matches overall.
