Golcar United are looking to the future by trialling an under 23s side – with ace goalscorer Ash Flynn taking a leading role.
Current top scorer Flynn will take up the reins alongside Dalton Dynamoes coach Will Davidson. United secretary Ben Senior believes this is a big step for the club and one they need to make to keep progressing.
“The under 23s have come about for us because of how much talent there is in the local area,” said Senior. “There are a lot of good players especially in the Huddersfield and District League. It also helps that we have held local finals here at the Skye Direct Stadium.
“We’ve spoken to a number of clubs to see how they do things. It’s something we needed to do and look into.
“It also gives lads a chance to make that jump from playing junior football and go into men’s football. We want to create that pathway giving players the opportunity to play in North West Counties football for Golcar.”
Senior added: “Will takes our under 10s team and also coaches Dalton Dynamoes. He wants to bring some of that local talent here to Golcar. He knows lots of people in the amateur game.
“Will wants Ash involved and it’s a great step for him. It’s his first chance of being a coach and Will couldn’t think of anyone better to get involved.”
Senior also confirmed that the formation of the under 23s team doesn’t mean the reserve team will be disbanded.
“The reserve team will definitely be continuing,” he said. “It’s an opportunity for any second team players to try and push on and get into that first team. It also is there for any first team squad members to get a game if they need it.”
If any players are interested in joining the under 23 set up they should contact the club through their social media channels.
