Youngsters at Fixby Junior & Infant School secured a promise from Huddersfield MP Harpreet Uppal when she stopped by for a visit.

Student councillors Aadam, Olivia, Adam and Remy gave the Labour MP a guided tour of the school and highlighted how the playground was long overdue an upgrade.

“The playground is such an important space for us,” said one of the student councillors. “We love playing here, but we think it could be made even better with some updates.”

Fixby Junior & Infant School is in the process of joining the Polaris Multi-Academy Trust, which is supporting the school in creating the best possible environment for its pupils.

Resurfacing the playground has been identified as a priority to encourage active play and Harpreet said: “It’s clear how much the children value their outdoor space.

“As the MP for Huddersfield, I am proud to champion the needs of pupils at local schools like Fixby Junior & Infant School.

“I will raise the school council’s concerns directly with the Education Secretary and will also explore how the wider community can come together to support the trust’s vision.

“Education should always be a priority, and both the Government and I are determined to give young people the best possible environment to learn and develop in.”

Headteacher Claire Allen said: “We are thrilled to have had Harpreet here. Her support means so much to our school community.

“The students were excited to share their ideas and we’re hopeful that with the backing of the Polaris Multi-Academy Trust, we can achieve our goal of upgrading the outdoor space.”
