Slaithwaite will be buzzing this weekend with its Christmas lights switch-on and two festive fayres.
This Saturday (November 30) will feature Christmas fayres hosted by Waves day care centre and the village’s scouts along with a Christmas tree festival and an arts market before the lights are switched on at 5pm.
This is immediately followed by fireworks and a procession to Slaithwaite Fire Station where there will be a chance to meet Santa, eat festive food and watch live entertainment from singing firefighter Jon Arey and the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service Band until 7.30pm.
Slaithwaite Christmas lights are put up by Slaithwaite Community Association volunteers headed by organiser Richard Izzard, who said: “Businesses, charities and local groups have pulled out all the stops with events and activities on offer throughout the village all day. Come to enjoy and celebrate everything Slaithwaite has to offer.”
There will be a Christmas tree festival at St James’ Church in Slaithwaite from 10am to 6pm and a Christmas Art Market in Globe 1.
The Waves Christmas Fayre is staged in Waves day centre for adults with learning difficulties and physical disabilities right next to Huddersfield Narrow Canal.
It runs from 10am to 3pm and features the Waves choir doing a couple of slots late morning and lunchtime along with singers Damien Stirling (12noon to 1pm) and George Harris from 1.30pm to 2.30pm.
The event will also feature 40 stalls selling everything from crafts and jewellery to cakes and paintings, along with donkey rides.
Waves also has its own shop selling arts and crafts made by its members. Food such as bacon or sausage butties, cakes and drinks will be served all day.
Huddersfield entrepreneur and philanthropist Graham Leslie will be signing copies of his autobiography Ahead Of The Curve between 11am and 1pm which is raising money for Making Waves, the charitable side to Waves.
Graham founded highly successful pharmaceuticals company Galpharm and became the instigator and driving force behind building Huddersfield’s stadium 30 years ago when he was chairman of Huddersfield Town.
There will also be a Christmas Fayre hosted by the 33rd Slaithwaite Scout Group at Slaithwaite Community Centre from 10am to 4pm featuring Santa’s Grotto, crafts and games.
