New images have been released for how the new £16.5 million Huddersfield Market could look – and Kirklees Council wants feedback from the public.

The council wants to keep the traditional market with a variety of stalls while bringing in more food and drink outlets and having space inside the market hall for events.

Outside, opposite the market hall and next to the car park, will be Market Yard with two new buildings. There will be indoor units for traders and small businesses and outdoor stalls which can be taken down when not in use.

The previous Conservative government allocated £16.5 million in funding for the project and that was confirmed by new Chancellor Rachel Reeves in her recent Budget.

Council officers have been working on the scheme since November 2023 and the council has now launched a period of public consultation.

The council wants to know what people enjoy most about visiting the market, their views on the proposals and if there is anything else that should be provided to ensure a vibrant and sustainable market in the town centre.

The majority of the investment will be focused on the existing Grade II* listed market hall which dates from 1887. It is characterised by its decorative cast iron frame, large roof spans and glazed exterior walls, however the structure is showing its age and needs essential repairs.

Research has been undertaken to establish the original paint colours, which as part of a comprehensive repair, will be faithfully restored.

The images show the original paint colours which are traditional red, pinks and creams. These were typical of municipal buildings and services in Huddersfield at that time.

The two new buildings at Market Yard will be targeted at traders, producers and business start-ups which require small self-contained units. The Market Yard is designed to be an attractive public space whether the outdoor market is on or not.

The designs also include changes to the existing stalls including new demountable stalls which can be moved and re-arranged to suit the different requirements of individual market days.

This will mean the market has enhanced capability to host a varied and diverse mix of market offers and market-led events. This is designed to support existing traders while attracting new traders and visitors.

New permanent, fixed stalls with power and water provision within the main market are also included in the designs.

These would provide space for traditional market offers such as greengrocers, butchers, fishmongers and others. The aim is to have a mixed and varied market.

The council are engaging with the public from Friday November 22 to Monday December 23 on the plans.

Residents can come along to Huddersfield Market on Saturday November 23 and Tuesday November 26 to view the designs in person and speak to the project team.

Clr Graham Turner, Cabinet member for finance and regeneration, said: “Huddersfield Market is already a popular town centre location where people like to visit and support local businesses and through this investment we want to ensure it remains so for generations to come.

“These plans would drive more footfall by giving people even more reasons to visit, with room to enjoy seasonal events and socialise with friends and family.

“We have been engaging with residents and traders to create designs that work for everyone. After listening to what people have had to say, further concept designs are now available to comment on as part of a fresh consultation.”
