Football fans have the chance to lead the way in sports sustainability by joining a groundbreaking event in Huddersfield.

Pledgeball, a charity that was recently named Grassroots Organisation of the Year at the BBC Green Sports Awards, is hosting a football sustainability roadshow at the John Smith’s Stadium on Monday December 9 from 6pm.

Fans of any clubs are invited to have their say on the night, regardless of who they support.

The event will include two interactive workshops: one to discuss the main sustainability challenges fans see in football, and another to generate ideas for practical solutions.

The long-term aim of these workshops is to turn fans’ interests and ideas into a coherent policy agenda, positioning them as crucial stakeholders in future discussions.

With climate change increasingly affecting football, from flooded stadiums to rising energy costs, many clubs have begun to adopt various sustainability measures, including signing up to a new Sustainable Travel Charter.

Fans have also been vocal about their concerns, campaigning against the expansion of European club competitions, calling out the growing trend of fast fashion in club shops, and opposing attempts to play domestic games abroad.

Ahead of the event, Pledgeball CEO Katie Cross said: “Our goal is to make sure that the voices of fans and community groups are at the heart of football’s sustainability efforts.

“The roadshow is a vital step toward that goal, and we’re excited about the potential to take it nationwide.”

A spokesperson for the Huddersfield Town Supporters’ Association (HTSA) added: “Sustainability isn’t just about big ideas, debates and policies; it also entails smaller, practical steps that we can all take.

“It means supporting local institutions, buying from local businesses, and taking pride in your local environment — all things that come naturally to football fans.

“We are delighted, then, that this innovative new roadshow will take place in Huddersfield at the new H Town fan bar.

“It presents a perfect opportunity for fans to work together to safeguard the clubs and game we all love for generations to come.”
