A young golfer from Huddersfield is making waves in the women’s game in the United States.
Ruby McLellan, a member at Woodsome Hall Golf Club in Fenay Bridge, is currently at Lincoln Memorial University (LMU) in Tennessee.
Ruby delivered a standout performance at the NCAA South Regionals at Cleveland Country Club to claim a place at the NCAA Division II Women’s National Championships at Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. She became the first woman in LMU history to qualify for the nationals.
Ruby finished tied for 5th place at the regionals with rounds of 76-73-72, which took her into a play-off.
Both Ruby and her opponent missed the green in regulation on the play-off hole. Her opponent, from Rollins College, ended up making a bogey. Ruby had a 6ft putt for par.
She described the moment as the “most nervous I have ever felt on a golf course.” Ruby, however, held her nerve and went on to roll the putt in.
Woodsome Hall Madam Captain Helen Smithson said: “This is a truly brilliant achievement, and we send Ruby our congratulations, together with the very best of luck, for the National Championships.”
